Tonight, as D was working in his office, and I in my studio/office, we both heard a loud noise and felt a slight tremble in the house. We asked each other if the other had heard the terrible noise. He turned off his music, and I listened carefully over the rumbling of the window unit air conditioner. That is when it happened again! This time, louder! The tremble was felt a little stronger this time. My first instinct was that Mia (the cat) had knocked something over...except, I realized that she was sitting on the chair near me. Then I imagined small explosions in the basement.
After the second boom, D ran down the stairs as fast as he could so that he could figure out what that was. I ran into the sitting room to switch off the air conditioner. My heart was beating fast. I then looked out the window towards the front of the house. That's when I saw him. I saw a shadow moving near my vehicle and behind our large maple tree. I yanked up the blinds, pushed the window and screen open and popped my head out of the window. I saw him! He was walking briskly away from our house. I ran down the stairs probably say ... "That fucker is outside...he tried to break in!!" D was already on the phone with the cops to let them know we thought someone tried to break in.
Fast forward 45 to 50 minutes later. No cop. We were too chicken shit to check out the basement by ourselves. So, we waited. And waited. Then, I began to hear sirens, and a helicopter. I wondered if it was related. About 5 minutes after the helicopter pulled off, a police car drove up. We were already outside talking to our neighbor (after 12 AM) to tell him that we think someone tried to break into our house. Earlier today, he told D that someone broke into the house next to him. Freaky!
Anyway, the police officer asked us what happened, and then walked the perimeter of the house with her nifty flashlight. We followed her around and didn't really notice anything. In the end, she thinks that he probably tried to punch out a window...and then was scared off when he heard D running down the stairs.
After giving the description of the person I saw, the cop snickered and said that it matched the description of one of the men (there were 2) that the cops were chasing. They were being chased by police over something else.
So, now it's 1 AM, and I can't sleep!
